Choosing a destination is the first and most personal decision in any trip. The guides in this section are designed to help you understand what a place is actually like to visit before you commit to going: what the experience is genuinely like on the ground, what the practical logistics involve, when to go and when to avoid, what things cost, where to stay, and what to be aware of in terms of safety and practicality.
We cover four broad regions: Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa and the Middle East. Within each region, we build out country and city guides written from direct personal experience. We do not publish destination guides for places our writers have not visited.
How to Use the Destination Guides
Each destination guide follows a consistent structure so you can find what you need quickly without reading everything.
Overview and character. What the destination is actually like, who it suits, and what makes it different from apparently similar alternatives.
Best time to visit. Specific guidance on seasons, peak periods, weather patterns, and the trade-offs between the best weather and the most crowded or expensive times.
Getting there. How to reach the destination from major departure points: the best airports to fly into, land border crossings where relevant, and rail options.
Getting around. Transport within the destination: what works well, what is expensive, what requires pre-booking.
Where to stay. Neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood guidance on which areas suit different types of traveller, with specific recommendations across budget levels.
What things cost. Honest cost benchmarks for accommodation, food, transport, and activities. We update these regularly; each guide is dated with its last update.
Safety and practicalities. Specific safety information beyond generic cautions, including the actual risks in the destination and health considerations relevant to it specifically.
Internal links. Every destination guide links to the relevant visa guide in our Trip Planning section, the destination’s safety assessment, and the accommodation overview for that location.
How We Choose What to Cover
We add destinations to this section as members of our team visit them and can write about them honestly from direct experience. We do not cover destinations by aggregating existing content, commissioning writers who have not visited, or using AI to generate text that simulates first-hand experience. This means our coverage grows slowly and deliberately rather than comprehensively and quickly.
If you are researching a destination we do not yet cover, we are happy to receive questions at contact@advice4travel.com. Frequently-requested destinations influence what we prioritise next.
Browse by Region
Europe
Europe is the world’s most visited region for reasons that are genuine rather than merely habitual: it concentrates extraordinary cultural and geographical variety into a compact, well-connected area where the infrastructure is generally reliable. The challenge is managing the gap between European travel at its best, which is genuinely exceptional, and European travel during peak season at over-visited sites, which can be genuinely unpleasant.
Asia
Asia covers an enormous range of travel experiences and practical realities. Southeast Asia and East Asia have the most developed tourism infrastructure. South Asia, Central Asia, and the more remote parts of East Asia require more preparation and tolerance for logistical complexity, but offer some of the world’s most extraordinary experiences as a result.
Americas
The Americas span from the Arctic to the tip of South America, covering every climate and landscape. North America’s cities and national parks are the most familiar starting point for many travellers; Central and South America offer some of the world’s most spectacular natural environments. Distance is the dominant logistical factor; our guides address it specifically.
Africa and the Middle East
Africa and the Middle East are the most diverse and most misunderstood regions in the guides. The range within Africa alone, from the organised safari infrastructure of East Africa to the complex logistics of West Africa, is wider than the range within all of Europe. The Middle East similarly encompasses destinations as different as Jordan and regions where independent travel is not advisable.

Finding the Right Destination for Your Trip
If you are still deciding where to go rather than researching a specific destination already chosen, a few questions help narrow the options:
How much time do you have? A long weekend suits a single city in a nearby country. Two weeks allows a country or a compact multi-country region. A month or more opens up destinations that take time to do properly.
What is your budget? Southeast Asia, Central America, Eastern Europe, and parts of the Middle East offer very high-quality travel experiences at dramatically lower cost than Western Europe, North America, Japan, or Australia. The budgeting guide covers cost benchmarks by destination type.
What do you want from the trip? Cities, beaches, mountains, history, food, wildlife: different destinations are genuinely better and worse for different things.
What is the visa situation for your passport? Some destinations are straightforward for most Western passport holders; others require advance applications or have significant processing times. The visa guide hub covers this in detail.
What is the safety situation? Safety varies significantly by destination and by region within countries. Our safety hub covers destination-specific assessments.
