About the Rumpl Brand

The founders of the company had a dream about insulated sleeping bag blankets that would keep them warm in the event of a cold night spent in a campervan, which served as the basis for the brand’s concept.

Performance of the Rumpl Blanket

We tested the performance of the Rumpl blanket and listed the results below:

Materials

100% recycled ripstop outer shells can be found on the “everywhere” Rumpl blanket styles. This fabric has a lightweight parachute or sleeping bag-like feel to the touch and is made to be water-, stain-, dirt-, and odor-resistant.

Water beads runs off the shells when they are splashed or dipped because they have been treated with a water-repellent coating. It’s not meant to be left outside or used in water or heavy rain because it will eventually soak through.

It is also fairly durable; it can withstand some abrasion, including from pet claws. We haven’t yet made a hole in our Rumpl, but even then, it can be easily repaired because it is made of ripstop fabric, which won’t unravel or “pull” like other fabrics, like wool blankets, can.

Comfort

This blanket is excellent for providing outdoor warmth when worn over a base layer, but it’s not the one we’d choose if we wanted to curl up inside on a weekend afternoon. The 30D ripstop nylon shell is slick and fluid.

Additionally, if you aren’t holding onto it when you switch positions, it has the propensity to slide off of your lap. Although its light weight makes it ideal for travel, it also works against it when it comes to stability.

However, it makes a great companion for outdoor social events, a deluxe layer for camping, or long-distance travel. Its dimensions, 52 x 72 inches, are slightly below average.

Despite our wish for a few more inches in both directions, the blanket is big enough to wrap around completely, making it a cozy addition to an Adirondack chair. It can feel sticky if you start to perspire underneath due to its synthetic exterior.

Warmth

Duck down filled with 600 fills is warm. The 80% down, 20% feather blend complies with the Responsible Down Standard. The blanket has a nice loft and is very compressible, allowing it to be extremely warm for its weight.

It is pleasantly warm and cozy once we got past the initial sting of cold that comes with “putting on” a nylon fabric. We felt comfortable sleeping in temperatures as low as 50 degrees even though it is not specifically rated for that.

Versatility

The Puffy is an outdoor-oriented blanket with a lot of features that make it fairly adaptable. It’s fantastic for deck parties outside. It’s a great option whether you want to mingle or curl up by a fire.

If the temperature is too high for a full sleeping bag or if you need an additional layer on top of the bag, it can serve as a stand-in while camping. If the ground is wet, we advise placing something underneath; however, it can also be staked out to serve as a picnic blanket.

Packed Size

This blanket has a lot of advantages, one of which is how compact it is. It includes a clip closure and a stuff sack with a roll-top. It’s not a compression sack, which we actually found to be a benefit; it’s very simple to just jam down into the bottom of a pack, and it keeps compressing if you pile more items on top of it.

If you don’t want to use the sack, the extremely stuffable Puffy nicely fills the spaces in a backpack.

Features & Design

A thoughtful and useful blanket, this one. Our favorite characteristics include the cape snap, which transforms the Down Puffy into a hands-free cover (though it does require a little dexterity to get it clipped up).

This can still go through the washing machine even with its down fill. In the event that you are briefly caught in the rain, the outer nylon does dry fairly quickly.

However, after going through the washing machine, the down may require some time and care before it is completely dry and re-lofted (so avoid washing it if you won’t be using it for a few days).

It comes in a range of patterns and prints, from traditional solids to wacky multi-color gradients to more daring natural scenes. In addition to providing the practical benefit of holding the down in place, the somewhat asymmetrical baffles add yet another layer of style to this blanket.

The corner loops are also appreciated because they allow us to stake out the blanket for a picnic.

What We Don’t Like?

It Gets Staticky

After wearing the Rumpl around my house for a while, I discovered that the fabric becomes quite staticky from rubbing against your clothing. I had to literally peel the blanket off my back when I took it off, which may simply be a result of the relatively dry air inside. There was a lot of pet hair stuck to it as well because it had a strong static charge.

I experienced similar problems after putting on the blanket outside. I wrapped myself in it for a few hours while relaxing on my deck, and when I took the blanket off, the back was caked in dirt and dust that adhered to the fabric. Although it is simple to brush off, I didn’t like how much debris it gathered while in use.

The Construction Could Be Better

The MSRPs for the smaller one-person and larger two-person versions of the Rumpl blanket are $99 and $199, respectively. I was somewhat let down to discover that some of the seams on the blanket were less-than-immaculate because these prices are fairly high for an outdoor blanket.

There are a few places along the blanket’s edge where protruding strings were left over. The cape clip also raises concerns about how long it would last under regular use because it appeared to be a little strained; I can see it ripping out of the seam with time.

How to Wash the Rumpl Camping Blankets?

All Rumpl puffy quilts are machine washable, but the manufacturer advises washing yours on a cool or warm setting with a small amount of detergent to avoid damaging the waterproof treatment (DWR).

According to their website, you can tumble dry the blanket on a low setting or hang it outside to dry.

It can take a long time for the insulation to fully dry out when it is hung out to dry, so we find that the latter helps ensure that it is truly dry (and won’t smell damp or musty).

Should You Buy the Rumpl Down Puffy?

It is extremely light and compressible, the Down Puffy. It’s the ideal blanket for excursions where weight and space are limited. Both as a blanket and poncho, it is warm.

The material is sometimes sticky and swishy, which makes it less comfortable than some other options. Although it performs admirably, we feel that other blankets in the same price range can accomplish just as much, if not more.

Conclusion: Should You Buy the Rumpl Down Puffy?

Camping, nighttime beach excursions, sporting events, or even just relaxing on your patio at night are all excellent uses for the Rumpl Puffy Blanket. With the special cape clip, you can wear the blanket around your shoulders while keeping your hands free. The blanket is lightweight enough to be carried easily.

But remember that this is a mid-to lightweight blanket. Something much more robust is what you’ll need if you’re looking for something to keep you warm during the worst of winter.

The Rumpl Down Puffy Blanket is a significant improvement to the game of casual blankety warmth, and its price tag retains its value with each use.
